Course Description

Cardiothoracic surgery is a speciality of medicine that focuses on the surgical treatment of disorders that affect the Thoracic organs. This discipline of medicinal grounds focuses on the treatment of lung and cardiac disorders (i.e. lung and heart illnesses). Other than New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery are two distinct surgical specialities. Cardiac surgery deals with the major vessels and heart, whereas thoracic surgery deals with the lungs and other thoracic organs. They are placed together as the surgeons training in the cardiothoracic speciality gains a comprehensive understanding of both professions before focusing on a specific aspect of the speciality. Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery is a speciality of medicine that encompasses all three fortes: cardiology, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery. In India, only one government college offers a Ph. D in Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, and the details are—New Delhi`s All India Institute of Medical Sciences as per the Medical Council of India`s records. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences is the only statutory independent organisation offering a Ph. D in Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery.

Eligibility

Eligibility for admission to AIIMS`s Ph. D. programme in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery is as follows: Candidate seeking admission to the Ph. D. programme in Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery must have one or more of the following qualifications: — A Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine or its equivalent diploma or degree from the National Board of Examination in the discipline of Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgery or M. Sc in Nursing with at least 60% of marks or Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine or its equivalent diploma or degree from the National Board of Examination in the discipline of Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgery — MBBS with a grade point average of at least 55 per cent.
