Overview
Who is Stationary Engineer?
A stationary engineer is a skilled professional, who oversees, operates and troubleshoots industrial and mechanical machinery and equipment that aims to provide energy of some type. Stationary engineering requires monitoring the equipment, maintaining it, repairing it, testing it, and recording it to ensure efficiency and productivity. Stationary engineers also called as boiler operators or operating engineers are termed as such because they operate equipment similar to that on ships and trains except these don’t move, or are stationary rather than being on a moving vehicle. The mechanical and industrial equipment managed by these technicians varies from boilers, air compressors, refrigeration units, engines to generators. Due to the omnipresent nature of the work, since these systems managed by stationary engineers are found everywhere, stationary engineers have great employability opportunities and can be employed in shopping malls, airports, hotels, hospitals, schools, power plants, manufacturing plants, petrochemical plants, commercial buildings and so on. It should be noted that stationary engineer jobs may involve working in a noisy, uncomfortable environment for long hours and also working with hazardous machinery and equipment.
Typical day at work
What does Stationary Engineer do?
In large industrial and commercial facilities, a Stationary Engineer maintains the safety and performance of mechanical equipment and hardware. Stationary engineers are in charge of a variety of responsibilities. This covers, above all, the administration, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical power systems at the workplace. A Stationary Engineer deals with the ever-changing power issues of our day. They work on sophisticated devices and systems daily to guarantee their safe and effective operation. Stationary engineers are frequently in charge of maintaining and balancing air systems, as well as hydronic systems that heat or cool buildings by circulating fluid (such as water or water vapour) via a closed system of pipes. They may inspect the ventilation system's air quality and make modifications to keep the boiler operating within legal limits. contemporary equipment servicing, troubleshooting, repairing, and monitoring.
There are different types of stationary engineering jobs typically depending on the area of specialization. Generally, it comprises of the following tasks:
Maintain and operate stationary equipment such as steam engines to provide utilities for industrial processes
Conduct periodic inspections of the equipment to identify malfunctions
Repair, replace, adjust the faulty system
Maintain a record of daily operational data such as the temperature, water levels, voltage load, fuel consumed and so on
Ensure safety standards are met
Periodically lubricate equipment for more effective results
