Who is Seismologist?

Seismology is the study of understanding earth's movements and its importance in industries like the fuel industry. A bachelor's degree is required to start a career to become a seismologist. Seismologists are scientists who study planetary activities and earthquakes their effects, and tsunamis. Seismologist use instruments to gather data and monitor the Earth's crust activities. Seismologist usually works in offices or laboratories also get opportunities to travel to sites of seismic. Seismologist is expert in forecasting earthquakes and thereby help in reducing the risk loss of material and life. The role of seismologist is to find out possible factors responsible for these disturbances which can cause a massive earthquake in the near future and the disturbance happening in the plates deep under the earth crust. Seismologist constantly watch seismographs, assess an earthquake’s earth-shattering damage potential, map earthquakes, visit quake sites, evaluate dangers and hazards, measure magnitude on the Richter scale and conduct research.

What does Seismologist do?

Seismologists are researchers who study earthquakes and planetary activities and their effects, for example, tidal waves. They use instruments to assemble information and screen the Earth's crust and the underlying layers. They normally work in workplaces or research facilities, however, they may go to destinations of seismic action.

The roles and respnsibilities of seismologist includes:

• To interpret and analyze seismic data to categorize different sources
• To use data sets for evaluating hazards
• To review research literature on current discoveries
• To provide evaluating reports to engineering companies, governments or other external stakeholders
• To use computers in modelling information, gain insight for possible hypotheses.

What are the skills, abilities & aptitude needed to become Seismologist?

To become a seismologist, the aspirants must need to develop certain skills like, attention, Problem-solving skills, ability to work independently as well as in team as they have to work for months without any break, ability to work tirelessly for hours, that too in odd hours and the capacity to concentrate irrespective of unfavorable conditions and surroundings, should be self-motivated and have the ability to keep persevering, presentation skills, team working, computing skills, time management/ organizing skills and people skills.
