Who is Respiratory Therapist?
Respiratory Therapy is a relatively new branch of Allied Health Sciences and a profession related to the scientific application of technology for the management, diagnosis, treatment, and care of cardiopulmonary and associated diseases. Respiratory therapists work with doctors and other healthcare professionals to evaluate, treat and care for patients with respiratory issues like breathing and other cardiopulmonary disorders. The role of the Respiratory therapist is to perform diagnostic tests and limit physical examination. The syllabus covered for Respiratory Therapy includes coursework related to the health, function and treatment of the heart and lungs. Respiratory therapists work with patients on problems related to breathing or the cardiopulmonary system. Respiratory therapists work with patients of all ages in areas of care, including chronic conditions- asthma and acute situations- heart attacks. Most states require a license to become a Respiratory therapist. The respiratory therapist salary is quite decent compared to other new allied health sciences fields, and it increases with experience. There is a massive opportunity for respiratory therapist jobs as it is one of the trending jobs of the new allied health science profession.

What does Respiratory Therapist do?
Patients who cannot breathe on their own are connected to ventilators, which give oxygen to the lungs. Therapists use a tube in the patient’s windpipe (trachea) and connect the tube to ventilator equipment. They then set up the equipment to regulate the oxygen supply.
The roles and responsibilities include:
- To examine and interview patients with cardiopulmonary disorders or breathing
- To develop patient treatment plans by Consulting physicians
- To perform diagnostic tests like measuring lung capacity
- To record and monitor patients record
- To teach patients about the use of the equipment and how to take medications.

To become a respiratory therapist, the aspirants must need to develop certain skills like Compassion, empathetic towards patients and sympathetic towards their needs, and must have ability to provide emotional support to patients, detail oriented, Interpersonal skills, Patience, Problem-solving skills, science and math skills, pay attention to details, teamwork spirit, follow instructions attentively, use a computer, have good communication, interpersonal skills and humane in nature.
