Pulmonology means a medical discipline primarily focused on the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory system disorders. Pulmonologists assess a patient's ability to withstand the stresses of surgery and help the surgeons create a breathing-management strategy for each patient.

- Gain a profound understanding of how to recognize and treat chest and lung-related diseases and conditions
- Use pulmonary function assessments and do physical exams on patients to evaluate basic lung function
- Update the patient information and charts to show recent results and treatments
- Examine the test outcomes to assess any suspicious findings
- Recommend and draft a treatment plan
- Address apprehensions or respond to any queries that patients may have about their health and well-being
- Assist patients to take care of their health by talking to them about maintaining proper nutrition and hygiene
- Recover or alleviate the symptoms found in patients with respiratory disorders and conditions
- Converse and recommend suitable treatment options for patients, including oral medicines, oxygen therapy, or inhalers
- Carry out specialized processes to attain samples from the lung or the chest wall lining
- Meeting with patients to talk about their symptoms
- Inspect patients with instruments like stethoscopes, x-rays and other diagnostic tools
- Following up with patients during and after treatment
- Monitor and supervise special services and facilities like respiratory care divisions
- Prescribe medication for problems such as sleep ailments, serious allergies and other pulmonary conditions and illnesses
- Well informed about the new and most successful pulmonary therapies and treatments
- Able to devise treatment strategies to meet a patient's particular needs, ranging from medicines to the use of a mechanical ventilator

- Pulmonologists must be superb communicators. Because pulmonologists deal closely with patients, they need to be able to listen to them actively and collect knowledge about symptom to make an accurate diagnosis. Also, pulmonologists must use non-technical terms when communicating with patients.
- Pulmonologists may work for long times with patients requiring special care. Extra patience may be essential for patients who are afraid of medical treatment. Many pulmonologists work long hours, odd hours and overnight. Pulmonologists are required to travel between their offices and hospitals to look after their patients.
- Pulmonologists will track and report different pieces of information relating to patient care accurately. Also, pulmonologists will need to perform tests, use that data to diagnose patients and form logical conclusions from the information available.
