Who is Politician?

Politics is a field associated with much negativity, associated with terms like corruption, greed, and nepotism. However, the role of politics is noble, which has been recently proven by Justin Trudeau, Barack Obama, Jacinda Ardern, and more. Recently, there has been a rising trend of people from non-political backgrounds joining politics and achieving substantial success. A politician is a public servant who participates in how a government runs and functions.

What does Politician do?

A politician is involved in party politics or who holds or seeks government office. Politicians propose, support and create laws or policies that govern the land and, by extension, its people. Broadly speaking, a politician can be anyone who seeks to achieve political power in any bureaucratic institution.

• Actively analyze political behaviour and political systems
• Express beliefs and views on governance and volunteer for activities to support their beliefs
• Contest elections for being elected to the Council of Ministers of the State or the Union, and become members of a State Legislature or Union Parliament, the highest executive body
• Attend parliament sessions and represent their constituencies
• Take part in parliamentary debates where issues and laws related to governance are tabled, voted and passed
• Plan and carry out development tasks for social welfare

• Listening to and addressing public concerns and demands
• Propose, vote on, and enact laws and policies that relate to the needs of the public, including budget plans and funding allocation
• Making public appearances at various political functions and events
• Attending public or private meetings to hear about and discuss political issues

Politicians need to communicate with people in both written and spoken communication effectively. Thus, excellent communication and public speaking skills have utmost importance in the field of Politics. They also require active listening skills to hear the grievances of the people.

Politicians need to have excellent leadership and team management skills. They also need to have a solid commitment to public life and voice opinions. They should possess an interest to work for the welfare of the people. Thus, having high emotional intelligence can be an additional benefit.

The politician must also have adequate problem-solving, decision-making, negotiation, and multitasking skills to work with people.
