Who is Network Engineer?

Network Engineers plan, implement and oversee the computer networks that support in-house voice, data, video and wireless network services.  Network Engineers and administrators are different. The engineers handle more of the technological side such as planning, design etc., whereas the Administrators look into the day to day maintenance, management and troubleshooting efforts. There are different positions within the umbrella term of Network Engineer, which are network technician, network analyst, wireless network engineer, network security engineer, network administrator, network manager etc. The key responsibilities and skills required for each would differ from one another.

What does Network Engineer do?

A network engineer works as a professional in the field of computers. The network engineer has a good understanding of the various computer software system and the aspects related to the virus and anti-virus of the computers. They are well aware of how to protect one's system while expanding their computer network, both at the same time. The network engineer develops such a security system that cannot be breached and go by the names of computer security software. They also tend to analyze and monitor the networks that are connected with the present system, concerning the performance of the system, the design of the network(s), and the security-based bugs. This is technical work where the knowledge of computer security and networks is very well required.

To design system configuration, define, install and direct the system and establish the networking environment.
To document and enforce system standards
To maximise the efficiency of the network by constant supervision, troubleshooting and upgradation.
To collaborate with network architects to achieve network optimisation.
To analyse the issues and concerns regarding the network on a deeper level.
To enhance the security by establishing policies, as well as to define and monitor the access
To support and administer firewall environments in line with IT security policy
To create reports on the operational status with information from various sources.
To configure routing and switching equipment, hosted IP voice services and firewalls
To assist the on-site engineers as well as the users and customers during installation
To undertake capacity management and audit of IP addressing and hosted devices within data centres
To associate with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk engineers on a regular basis
To communicate directly to the customers via email and phone for initial requirement capture.

What are the skills, abilities & aptitude needed to become Network Engineer?

A network engineer must have an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the business, technical needs and requirements of the respective industry needs. They must also have excellent communication skills to understand the customers requirements and the focus of their business. Good communication and people skills would also enable them to explain the technical side clearly to the staff who does not have a technical background. They must have the ability to multitask as well as the ability to prioritize their tasks. Attention to detail is a golden feather on their crown. They must also have the ability to work in a team. Good organisational skills is always preferable
