Who is Information Security Analyst?

Every organisation must address the issue of cybersecurity. With the increased frequency of highly sophisticated hacker attacks, a security analyst plays a vital role in ensuring an organisation's security, sensitive information, and data integrity. Information security analysts have a broad understanding of computer systems, networks, information technologies, cybersecurity threats and how to prevent, detect, and recover from data breaches. Computer Security Specialists, Information Security Officers, Information Systems Security Analysts, Information Technology (IT) Security Analysts, and Security Analysts are all terms used to describe information security analysts.

What does Information Security Analyst do?

An information security analyst is involved in the design and implementation of security systems to protect a company's or organisation's computer networks from cyber attacks and the establishment and maintenance of security standards. Their responsibilities include monitoring computer networks for security flaws, installing security software, and documenting any discovered security flaws or breaches.

• Monitor the company’s networks for security breaches
• Investigate on a security breech violation
• To protect sensitive information, install and use software like firewalls and data encryption programs
• Formulate reports to document security breaches and the degree of the damage caused
• Conduct and document penetration testing, which is when analysts simulate attacks to look for vulnerabilities in their systems before they can be exploited
• Research the newest IT security trends
• Recommend security enhancements, upgrades, and new hardware or software
• Help computer users to install or gain information about novel security products and procedures
• Creating disaster recovery plan, for emergency
• Be updated on the latest methods attackers use to penetrate computer systems
• Develop and implement security standards, ensure compliance of security and emergency policies and healthy procedures to protect an organization’s data from being inappropriately accessed or used
• Promote security awareness in the organization and train users on security measures
• Maintain or modify computer security files to add or integrate new software, change the status of an individual’s access, and correct errors
• Create plans to prevent any malicious or inadvertent use of data, create plans for emergency use, and monitor access to data
• Work with executives, managers, and employees to identify and articulate the most efficient and effective data protection practices
• Plan for other threats to the organization's data, such as threats caused by severe weather, maintaining power to servers in case of a local outage, and planning for continuing operations at substitute sites if the main operations site has to shut down
• Prioritize threats, assign resources to handling data breaches and recovery practices, and send information about any subsequent damage.

What are the skills, abilities & aptitude needed to become Information Security Analyst?

• In addition to experience, continuing education, and industry certifications, one must gain knowledge of cybersecurity, risk management, and information technology infrastructure. Ethical hacking, penetration testing, and data recovery are all examples of cybersecurity skills.
• Security analysts use analytical skills to gain in-depth knowledge of computer networks and digital systems and problem-solving skills to resolve any issues. In addition, creativity enables security analysts to apply innovative techniques to security threats or breaches and anticipate potential problems.
• Information security analysts must have research and auditing skills to determine which technologies best meet an enterprise's security needs, often piloting an audit of defences, exposures, and vulnerabilities.
• Security analysts must demonstrate project management skills, time management, organisational skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports for colleagues.
• Successful information security analysts are proactive and detail-oriented individuals who can detect minor changes in system performance and correctly diagnose them as indicators of a security breach, unauthorised software, or malware.
