Who is Indian Engineering Services Officer?
Indian Engineering Services (IES) or Engineering Services Examination (ESE) comprises engineers who work under the government of India and are designated as Class – 1 officers. They are appointed to accomplish technical and managerial functions for the Indian government. The Indian Engineering Service's workload depends entirely on the designing branch and the administration or division in which they are enlisted. These civil servants may transfer to any of the Government of India's associations, organisations, frameworks, services, or public sector undertakings.

What does Indian Engineering Services Officer do?
Indian Engineering Services Officer's job is to build, design, repair, maintain, and modify various components, objects, electrical things, etc. This is a technical job wherein the professional works across the areas like roads, telecommunications, railways, etc. The Indian Engineering Services Officer ensures the smooth functioning of the electronic equipment. They tend to repair the parts and replace the defective parts if required for the longer functioning of the equipment. They also tend to create and perform standardised tests to analyse and ensure the better performance of the electronic devices, the smooth functioning of the smaller parts in them, and the ensemble of the entire system to create a workable machine. Additionally, their job is to construct the system, the roads, the railway machines or tracks, and so forth, depending on their work domain. It is a very technical job requiring a lot of logic and precision.
The IES officer would have to handle situations related to coordination with various organs of the PE, communication with the government authorities, relationship with other similar PEs or private parties, etc. Decisions related to procurement, product specification, and verification, expansion, and scrutiny of public works sanctioned by the government, etc lie with the IES. The higher echelons of the IES enjoy considerable powers in terms of decision-making, implementation of the projects, and direct communication with the Ministries. They work across technical areas like roads, railways, manufacturing, defense, construction, public works, telecommunications, power, etc.

- They begin their careers as an Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Director following selection.
- After the experience of 3 to 4 years, they are promoted to executive engineer, director, or work manager. Finally, after completing 8 years of services, they become deputy general managers or joint directors.
- After earning over 13 years of experience, they can get promoted to the joint general manager or chief engineer of level 2.
- Twenty years of experience is sufficient to advance to chief engineer or additional general manager.
