A hearing officer is a member of a municipal, state, or federal executive or administrative department or agency in charge of general adjudication, legal disputes, and other claims involving agencies, departments, and people. As a hearing officer, one has to preside over hearings, oversee clerks, and resolve claims on behalf of the government.

It is a position that requires significant study and knowledge of the law, laws, and local rules. A hearing examiner typically has a strong background in legal interpretation, and a few jobs demand that you be a practising lawyer with a current law licence and litigation experience. For governmental matters, the hearing officers may also preside in federal court.
