Who is Flight Attendant?
Their main goal is to maximise customer satisfaction by ensuring the safety and comfort of the passengers. Their role has a two-pronged focus, hospitality and security. They are trained to respond to emergency situations including medical, safety, and security issues. To ensure the safety of the passengers, they demonstrate safety procedures before the flight departs. If such a situation is to arise, they provide first aid, deal with unruly passengers, and manage evacuations. They work collaboratively with the entire flight crew on board the aircraft, and report to the pilot and lead cabin attendant. The passengers on the flight, act as representatives of the airline. By enhancing customer satisfaction, they contribute to the revenue growth of the airlines. They assist the passengers throughout the flight, by helping them with the carry-on luggage, serving food/ beverages, providing information about the flight journey, responding to emergencies. Their work entitles them to various benefits such as competitive wages, bonuses, and travel discounts.

What does Flight Attendant do?
A flight attendant's tasks include the verification of the passengers' tickets to be assured that the passengers are boarding on the right flights. They also monitor the passengers' patterns and behaviors to ensure that the safety protocols are going in place and the crew and the passengers are traveling safely. They tend to prepare all the passengers for the takeoff and the landing of the airplane, along with any disturbances that tend to occur due to irregular weather. In case of any emergencies, the flight attendants tend to help the passengers as well. It is their most important duty in the time of the crisis. All the briefing on the plane is provided by the flight attendants only.
The core duties of a flight attendant include:
- Ensuring the safety of the passengers and the flight deck
- Check the functioning of all emergency equipment prior to takeoff and continuously monitor the same throughout the flight
- Ensure adequate supply of food and beverages and serve the same
- Ensure that the safety and security guidelines are being followed
- Explain and provide instructions to the passengers regarding how to use emergency equipment
- Respond to medical/ emergency situations during the flight and deliver first-aid as necessary
- Attend to passengers with special needs through the flight, including unaccompanied minors and those with disabilities
- Assist the passengers in stowing their cabin luggage, operating tray tables, and securing their seatbelts
- Prepare analytic reports for flight incidents and issues
Abilities & aptitude needed
What are the skills, abilities & aptitude needed to become Flight Attendant?
Customer service skills are at the core of this job which requires great interpersonal and communication skills. A flight attendant should be amicable and energetic, and fluent in verbal communication. They must be well-groomed and able to conduct themselves professionally to their passengers since they act as representatives of the airlines. They should be comfortable in working as a team and coordinating their work as a team player. In order to ensure the safety of the passengers, a flight attendant has to successfully complete a background check. Certain physical requirements of height and vision also need to be met in order to ensure that the flight attendant shall be able to carry out their duties efficiently. A service-oriented individual who is keen on travelling to different locations is best suited for this job. Since the job requires flight attendant to travel frequently, they should be willing to relocate as necessary to due operational needs. Other elements that are essential to this role include critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills.

Flight attendants find employment opportunities in regional, national, and international airlines as well as companies that charter flights. Their role requires them to travel frequently and work irregular hours, this includes working evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts. Depending upon the particular flight assignment, they can be away from home for several days of the week. Career advancement as a flight attendant shall depend upon their experience. After gaining ample experience, they can be promoted to take on managerial responsibilities of recruiting, scheduling, and instructing their subordinates.
