Who is Computer Network Architecture?

A network architect is a seasoned professional who designs and plans computer networks or data communication networks, be it a small connection between two offices or a large network connecting geographically dispersed areas.  Along with the technical skill set,  a network architect must also have a thorough understanding of the organization’s needs and objectives to determine the network layout plan that best serves the organization in a secure, efficient, economic and scalable manner. With the organization’s issues in mind,  a network architect or a computer network architect proceeds to carefully develop a blueprint of the network considering aspects such as information security, most suitable cable infrastructure, hardware and software for the project. 

Network architect jobs are extremely crucial which is why in order to qualify,  aspirants must have substantial relevant experience, a bachelor’s degree in computer networking or a related field and preferably even a Master’s degree or an MBA for a strong business acumen. When it comes to networks, the job profiles are found to often overlap and it can easily get confusing to differentiate between a network architect, a network engineer and a network administrator. Where a network architect designs the network, the network engineer builds and repairs it, and the network administrator manages and supports the network system.

What does Computer Network Architecture do?

Local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets are all examples of data transmission networks that computer network architects design and develop. These networks might be as simple as a connection between two offices or as complex as a multinational network of internationally spread communications systems.

Network architects must have extensive knowledge of an organization’s business plan to design a network that can help the organization achieve its goals.

The network architect job description typically comprises of the following tasks:

• Design a plan or layout, for a data communication network
• Determine the network hardware such as routers, modems, switches to be used
• Present the design-layout and support it with justification
• Perform periodic tests to evaluate network performance
• Work with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to understand and align the network layout with the organizational objectives
• Aid the network engineers, network admin and other personnel in network setup and configuration
• Consider the information security and other critical parameters when creating the network layout
• Research about the latest technology and evaluate the best technology for the organization

A network architect must have certain requisite skills and inclinations along with relevant educational background in order to excel in the field. Aspirants are expected to be excellent problem-solvers, have great communication skills and a sharp, analytic mind. A network architect also tends to work in highly challenging work environments with individual project work as well as team interaction which is why aspirants must have leadership skills,  team working skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
